Overview
On the first weekend of April, 2012, the Koumaria Residency will host the Medea Electronique project SoundscapesLandscapes. Within this four-day microresidency, sound and video artists and performers will meet together within the Taigetos mountain range and explore the create of a new form of artistic digital cartography.
Details
The SoundscapeLandscape project is based around the use of many different innovative techniques in field recording (both passive methods of simply capturing the sounds around us and new inquisitive practices). At the same time visual investigations will both partner the sounds and add a further dimension to how we perceive and make sense of each environment.
The Landscapes/Soundscapes project starts with an initial micro-residency, which aims to explore these themes as they operate within two different physical environments: the Koumaria Estate and the Onassis Cultural Centre. What are the sound marks and shaping agents in each place? How do these elements transform themselves and their new environment when they area transferred from one place to the other? What new elements would we understanding about both places if we walked around the Onassis Cultural Centre when it was resounding on all levels and in all corners to the soundscape of Koumaria? What insights would emerge if the process were to be reversed?
The project will culminate in a site-specific installation, addressing many of the questions that arise when we listen in and to each space. Through the cartography that emerges, the new Onassis Cultural Centre (www.stg.gr) will better find its sense of place within the sonic environment around it, and its own sonic identity in terms of the sound within it.
Background
By now it is a well-established practice to listen to the sounds of the real world recontextualized as recordings and to encounter them under various guises as or within music. It was over thirty years ago that Schafer (Murray) first coined the term ‘acoustic ecology’ and set out his guidelines for a new kind of listening, with the whole world as a universal ongoing musical composition. Schaeffer (Pierre) approached sonically similar territory from a quite different perspective, but in the same way also found it vital to set down his own prescription for establishing a new way to listen, extended this to form a new musical grammar.
If we step forward to today, we find that the ideas of ‘reduced listening’ and the ‘soundscape’ are as potent as ever. They are certainly more mainstream – a consistent presence in the gallery, improvisation venue and concert hall – but beyond this their influence can be felt in everyday life to an increasing degree. We all construct our own personal sonic map that is made up of an increasingly complex amalgam of the different environments we encounter during our daily routine. Today, perhaps more than every before, we are aware of both what we hear and of when and how we are listening, and even (sometimes) of the multitude of different agents and environments that seek to intervene in our listening and shape or direct the process.

Since Thursday we are in London shooting Fragments of the Unseen London. After several problems we had with private security forces we almost reached our goal.

The collective spent a profitable day refining individual projects. So many projects have developed a full head of steam that we have had to post a schedule for the main studio space. The video project involving stop animation was completed, and viewed by the sound artists with an ear towards creating an improvised sound track. Another session of natural movement took place, this time on a different part of the surrounding countryside. The circuit makers spent much of the day, solder irons lit, making assorted sounding devices. A piece for processed voice, saxophone, live electronics and dance was further refined and practiced. We continued the portrait project of all the residents. The ISE experimented with a conduction, which succeeded in bringing the ensemble into new sonic spaces. A new meditative piece for looped chanting voice and movement was practiced, while soundtracks for a photo documentary were created. The mood today was one of concentrated work, with increasing realization that the clock is ticking towards our weekend presentation. At our daily communal meal we discussed our upcoming presentation and decided that by the end of tomorrow all the individual projects should be near completion so we can begin the difficult process of creating out of them a compelling and sensible presentation. Much work ahead!
The house wakes up without the usual sparkling ferment of the past days. The feeling is rather that of a light buzz … small flocks of different insects silently at work on their projects.
After yesterday’s meeting with all the artists, a common schedule has been laid out to coordinate the activities and rehearsals throughout the day.
After a morning session of Authentic Movement with few partecipants in the olive grove, Joana, Guido and Alessio have been rehearsing their trio with voice, dance and sax, striving to reach a clarity of gestural intention as well a balance between improvisational and compositional structure. Tim has created on the fly a remote control (out of a common play-station joystick) for Alessio to process his voice with effects in real time.
In the afternoon, while Hans, John, Tim, Nicola and Cleopatra keep working on different projects (animations, interactive video projections, analog sound installation), we go out in the nature to pose – ups, naked – for Aspasia’s potraits project.
After a convivial dinner, the ISE ensemble rehearse in the main space generating a nocturnal intricate blend of analogic textures, monotonic drones and digital corrosive distortion.
Outside the night grows and expands, unnoticed.
A sense of concentrated focus pervaded today’s work. Most projects have their overall form and shape established, and are now being critiqued and fine-tuned. Not only were residents working on their projects for the Saturday performance, but those running workshops were busy preparing materials for them. We completed the photo essay on the residency, and further refinements were made to the video technologies in use. The ISE rehearsed again, working on establishing a wider range of dynamic moods and a more refined set of timbres. A sense of ease has descended upon the residents, who now assist each other in very natural ways, understanding better what each resident needs from the others. When one stops to think about it, the range of art practices developing here is mind-boggling: hardware design and construction, software design and construction, instrument making, video mapping, video audio controllers, animation, acoustic music, electro-acoustic music, electronic music, real time audio signal processing, dance and movement, photography, sculpture, voice work, new theatre arts, curation, and of course culinary arts! The evening featured a run-through of the existing projects, with first attempts at integrating into them video processing. Our next major task is to decide how to present the emerging projects so as to best reveal, on the one hand, the sense in which they are the product of a single resident’s vision, and on the other the many ways in which each project bears the hallmarks of the input of many residents.

After the wonders of the Italian kitchen last night, today
John Richards took a break from soldering circuits and
hacking electronic instruments in order to inhabit the kitchen
for several hours and produce tonights meal.
However, many hours before this point – and after numerous
early activities – the day took its shape from a meeting of all
the residents, where a quick once round the circle of people
gave everyone the chance to talk about the projects underway
and find further help and ideas from the others.
The outcome of this joint session seems to mark a point where
numerous ideas and circles of creative energy are starting to
come together, and what will finally be seen and heard back
in Athens is starting to assume a broad structural form.
The evening then took on firstly a sonic character (with the ISE
ensemble playing for the first time through a chamber-scale
sound diffusion system) and then a visual character (with careful
tuning of the video tracking and mapping to ‘plug-in’ to the system
dancers Ioanna and Stavros).
The evening developed into an extended and intensive
rehearsal, which unfortunately ended suddenly when artistic tensions
from outside the circle of musicians playing at that moment exploded
into life and shut down all activities. Breakfast tomorrow may well turn
out to be a turning point of sorts for the future mood and cooperative
structure within this house.
Last night we decided to have a series of meetings today, both to explain to the collective the projects the residents have been working on, and to draw residents into each others projects. This morning, after a late breakfast (there was quite the party last night!) a large group of residents participated in an Authentic Movement workshop. In one of the lower olive groves we explored the landscape while blindfolded, moving with a sighted partner who would keep us out of danger. Forced to map our environment with our senses of hearing, smell and touch, many found themselves creating imaginary landscapes that they were navigating. Having to faith in your own body, and your partner helped create new bonds of trusts, both within ourselves, and between residents. We then reconvened in the main house to have a meeting concerning the development of the assorted projects. It rapidly became clear that much progress had been made and a good 10-12 projects were well underway. The main challenge will be to integrate them into a unified performance. We then divided into break-out groups, to discuss the details of the individual projects, and see how they could be enriched by further collaborative work. Further video work on the stop animation project took place, which saw an exciting magic realism project emerge. Moe portraits were taken. Today also saw the first fruits of the video artists development of body mapping and sound signal responsive video tools, which the ISE with dancers started to experiment with. Voice work, based on drone loops was also experimented with, along with time elapse photography and further refinement of the micro-environment feedback table. Much headway was made in figuring out precisely how the theme of identity will enter into the presentation. We are also constantly conscious of how to best use the space at the Onassis Centre so that the audience can be made to understand both the process behind our final presentation, and the meaning(s) of the presentation itself.

It is day three of the Koumaria residency. All things considered it has been a good day. I woke up with a hangover after drinking copious amounts of local wine, but the head wasn’t too bad. It was a slow, slow breakfast, followed by a walk across the olive orchard to a small church perched on a hill. I have been thinking about creating a piece for two or three performers, a choreography of the hands on a small stage the size of a table. There is a feedback network created by two microphones and speakers. As the hands explore and play-out the space they interfere and interact with the feedback. I have been speaking to Ioana Paun and Alessio Castellacci about performing the work. I have also been working closely with good friend Tim Ward. Tim went out scavenging today and came back with some heavy terracotta tiles, weathered and battered (the curved type). They stood on the table between the microphones and speakers filtering and muting the sound. We have had mixed results. I tried processing and controlling the feedback in a variety of ways, but still looking for just the right sounds this is the. There were a couple of breaks this afternoon. Tried tying some long corn leaves to a fan. Much rustling and visually stunning, but this may remain a white elephant. Eric Clarke’s fiftieth birthday today! (John Richards)

This morning saw the beginning of concentrated, and collaborative, work, on a number of projects. A number of residents assisted in a video shoot for a stop-time animation piece concerning some rather animate rocks, a dancer, and the evocation of Inuit spirits. There was the refinement of a piece for movement, voice synthesis, saxophone and electronics. Further progress was made on a photo-documentary featuring portraits of each resident amidst the other residents. There was continued intensive video work done on creating systems to trigger videos based on both motion-capture and audio signal processing. These systems will soon be integrated into projects involving sound and movement. Intensive and detailed experiments with feedback and assorted micro-environments involving local stones and building materials rocked the house with a earthquake of beautiful sine-waves. We had the pleasure of an overnight visit by Carras Christos, the director of the Onassis Centre who will be hosting our presentations next weekend. He both got to see the project in its early formative stages, and participated in its creation and execution. As the sun set the residency was busy with video projections being prepared, assorted photo projects being undertaken, and some serious electronic sonic clouds emanating from the main studio.

Koumaria, Day two, Sept. 30 Blog
We awoke to bright sunshine seeming to make the nearby mountains loom even closer. A group of residents went to a nearby river by a mountain village in order to judge its suitability for shooting video and dance in the early morning mist. They then went to visit a nearby early Greek tomb nestled in the shoulder of a nearby hill. Upon retuning to the house, there was much activity–both sound and video work-stations were abuzz with activity. Immediately after lunch there were experiments in the main studio involving vocal processing with assorted signal processing, while upstairs the assorted video artists worked on perfecting assorted ways of mapping the sound to video projections. A more general sound jam followed, and then the residents went outside in the late afternoon sun to participate in a photo project focused on the arbitrariness of our self-constructed identities. While dinner cooked small groups of residents discussed the days collaborative experiments and planned ways to build upon them. Residents hitherto unfamiliar with the art practices of each other began to find common ground, and to test ways of expanding their own art practices to enable fruitful collaborations.

Koumaria Residency, 2011 Day one Sept 29 Arriving as the sun sets blood red over Mount Taigetos, the residency was already a bustle of activity. A number of residents had arrived the evening before, and activity was already taking place. Local olive wood logs were being carved, while the sounds of the carving was being recorded and processed in real time. The floor of the main studio had ever-changing video projections displayed on it, while cables and speakers were being positioned and tested. Sounds of assorted instruments were heard, many immediately transformed electronically. As always the smells from the kitchen raised everyone’s appetite, and the wine was flowing freely! The summer-like weather bodes well for outdoor activity tomorrow, our first full day with all the residents present.

Upper Stage
This year for the first time the presentation of the workshop is going to take place at the Upper Stage of the Onassis Cultural Centre at 107-109 Syngrou Avenue, Athens on the 8th of October at 20:00 pm. The performances will be introduced by Professor of Philosophy Eric Lewis from McGill University, Montreal, Canada who will give a lecture on improvising communities. In addition Koumaria residents in collaboration with the Education Department of the OCC will lead workshops for teens and families regarding contemporary new media and the theme of identity.

John Richards Electroacoustic Composer / Sound Artist
John Richards explores performing with self-made instruments and the creation of interactive environments. He has worked with many leading improvisers and musicians in the field of live electronics, and is a founder member of the groups kREEPA and Sand (Soul Jazz Records). He has also regularly collaborated with Nic Bullen as Black Galaxy and kREEPA. In 2002, his work with kREEPA helped initiate the OIK project at STEIM, Amsterdam, that involved the hacking of commercially available hardware to create economic musical interfaces. He has released numerous pieces in various guises on Gabriel Prokofiev’s nonclassical label including a work for piano and electronics performed by GéNIA with re-mixes by Vex’d and Max De Wardener amongst others. He has also worked with Tim Wright as sevenlegspider developing systems for live performance, installations, and music for Japanese choreographer Saburo Teshigawara.

Mariano Leotta Interactive Technology
Art director and multimedia designer, Mariano Leotta works and researches on interaction and multimedia with the purpose to crossbreed video, performance and installation in a single experience involving the audience. In 2006 he founds Artereazione, a network of research and production of multimedia, multidisciplinary art projects working on the axis Catania-Milan-Berlin with artists and designers from all over Europe. In videoart circles, he is also known as Born Holmer, a videoartist who likes to play with notes and frames creating a personal poetry by images, a visionary dream made with just few special effects and a very basic plot, allowing an absolute freedom to viewer’s imagination. His videos, installations and performances have been exhibit in various european cities, such as Roma, Milano, Venezia, Berlin, Lisbon, Salonikki, Athens.

Nicola Pavone Vjing / Video artist
Nicola Pavone is creating time-based computer art, researching on music visualization and interaction between music and video.
In 2005 he started with film-making and video editing, in 2009 he approached the live performance. Since 2010 he´s focusing on videomapping and organizing thematic workshops in Italy and the Czech Republic. Actually he is working on 2 projects – a generative/music_reactive VideoMapping on sculptures, and a live (danceable) mesh-up of cinema milestones.

Aspasia Koulira was born in Athens Greece in 1984. She has a BA in Photography. She has exhibited her work in Athens at Guru Upstairs Gallery, Benaki Museum of Contemporary Art, Cheap Art, Taf Gallery. She has also collaborated with major magazines and newspapers like, Soul, LiFo, Epsilon, Vimagazino, Athens Voice etc. She is currently involved in a project with Medea Electronique ‘Identity’. She is also working with the known journalist Kostas Vaxevanis on a magazine project.

Mythology and folklore has always been a main inspiration for me. Even in the overpopulated city life of today these ancient symbols still seem very relevant. It is this combination of the timeless and the daily life of the time we live in which makes it interesting. When I place my wood carvings in a wooden house at the countryside it usually becomes not much more than just a nice image. The tension comes when the natural wooden sculptures are placed on grey urban concrete. Something I aim for is to create a bridge which connects people with their environment. And to connect the mental with the material world. The last years I’ve been very touched by the animistic mythology of Eskimo’s. To me these stories often seem pretty absurd and far away from western moral. All animals, people and materials have a soul and are connected with each other. There isn’t any particular moral reason why things became the way they are. Things are just there because they are there. Confusion brought by absurdism and paradox is a weapon I like to use to loosen up our rusty brains.

ioana paun performance artist / theatre maker
Ioana Păun (b. 1984) is a theatre director and performer, member of the réaltympanica collective and tangaProject theatre group. She graduated from National Theatre University and Bucharest and Goldsmiths College in London. Ioana developed work around new drama, cutting edge performance and social art. Her latest work revolves around public space, social dynamics, mass media and participation, represented through everyday culture resources: Zero Decibels (performance on deaf issues and noise pollution in contemporary Bucharest – Foarte Mic Theatre), trenSformers (interventions in trains, documenting regional perceptions), TV for Dummies (remote controlled performance – National Theatre Iasi). As part of réaltympanica, Ioana works in site specific contexts, generating close to life experiences for the audience through cinematic dramaturgy and pervasive media.
Alessio Castellacci is a sound composer, performer and teacher based in Berlin . He has a BA in Developmental Psychology at the Università La Sapienza (It) and a BA in Choreography at the Dance Maker Dep/ARTEZ (Nl). He is member of the artistic network Fingersix. As a sound composer, he has recently premiered in Berlin with the physical piece “Ghost” with long time collaborator choreographer Hyoung Min Kim. As a teacher, he works extensively in Europe working with dancers, actors and musicians with his method for voice & movement improvisation.

Πρόγραμμα νέων μέσων και τεχνολογιών για εφήβους και για όλη την οικογένεια
Το Τμήμα Εκπαιδευτικών Προγραμμάτων της Στέγης Γραμμάτων και Τεχνών, θέλοντας να ενισχύσει και να προβάλει νέα καλλιτεχνικά σχήματα που δημιουργούν ομαδικά και εκφράζονται με διαφορετικά νέα μέσα, θα συνεργαστεί φέτος με την ομάδα Medea Electronique για την παρουσίαση στη Στέγη του residency Κουμαριά.
Το 10ήμερο ερευνητικό εργαστήριο-residency Κουμαριά έχει θέμα του τον αυτοσχεδιασμό. Είναι ένα ορμητήριο για καλλιτέχνες που ασχολούνται με τα νέα μέσα, οι οποίοι συγκεντρώνονται στην περιοχή της Σελλασίας, κοντά στη Σπάρτη. Εμπνευσμένοι από την ελληνική φύση, καλλιτέχνες από όλο τον κόσμο συμμετέχουν σε έναν αυτοσχεδιαστικό πολυπολιτισμικό διάλογο δημιουργίας, ενώ θα ακολουθήσει η παραγωγή και παρουσίαση του έργου τους στη Στέγη Γραμμάτων και Τεχνών.
Πιο συγκεκριμένα, η Στέγη Γραμμάτων και Τεχνών μαζί με τους συμμετέχοντες του Medea Electronique Koumaria Residency θα προσφέρουν έναν κύκλο εργαστηριών και σεμιναρίων σχετικά με τα σύγχρονα νέα μέσα στην τέχνη και τον αυτοσχεδιασμό. Με έμφαση στη θεματική προσέγγιση της γνώσης, το θέμα των εργαστηρίων και των σεμιναρίων, όπως και του residency, θα είναι ο προβληματισμός για το τι είναι ταυτότητα και πώς την εκφράζουμε. Τα εργαστήρια και τα σεμινάρια θα πραγματοποιηθούν το τελευταίο Σαββατοκύριακο του Σεπτεμβρίου (24-25/9) και το δεύτερο Σαββατοκύριακο του Οκτωβρίου (8-9/10).
Οι συμμετέχοντες στα εργαστήρια θα έχουν άμεση επαφή όχι μόνο με την τελευταία τεχνολογία σε αντικείμενα όπως ο χορός, η ηλεκτρονική μουσική, η video art, το VJing, η φωτογραφία και το stop-motion animation, αλλά και προσωπική διδασκαλία από καταξιωμένους επαγγελματίες. Τα εργαστήρια θα ολοκληρωθούν με ένα συλλογικό έργο από τις διαφορετικές ομάδες, το οποίο θα παρουσιαστεί στη Μικρή Σκηνή της Στέγης, με ελεύθερη είσοδο για το κοινό.
Στα συγκεκριμένα εργαστήρια οι συμμετέχοντες:
- Θα έχουν την ευκαιρία να δημιουργήσουν/συζητήσουν/γνωρίσουν επαγγελματίες του χώρου, τόσο από την Ελλάδα όσο και από το εξωτερικό.
- Θα λάβουν πρακτικές και θεωρητικές γνώσεις γύρω από το αντικείμενο που έχουν επιλέξει με κοινό άξονα τα νέα μέσα (π.χ. εργαστήριο stop-motion animation, εργαστήριο VJ και φωτογραφίας, εργαστήριο αυτοσχεδιαστικού χορού, εργαστήριο μουσικού αυτοσχεδιασμού).
- Θα αξιοποιήσουν τα νέα μέσα και την υπάρχουσα τεχνολογία (π.χ. iPhone, android, κ.λπ., νέες τεχνολογίες τηλεφώνων που χρησιμοποιούν οι νέοι σήμερα) για τη δημιουργία έργων πολυμέσων.
- Θα εργαστούν σε ομάδες και, με αφετηρία την έννοια της συνεργασίας, θα παρουσιάσουν στη Μικρή Σκηνή της Στέγης Γραμμάτων και Τεχνών το έργο πολυμέσων που δημιούργησαν στα εργαστήρια.
Ακολουθούν πληροφορίες και λεπτομέρειες για τον κάθε κύκλο εργαστηρίων.

Video και video mapping
Οι έφηβοι θα εξοικειωθούν με software και διαφορετικές τεχνικές επεξεργασίας εικόνας. Χρησιμοποιώντας αντικείμενα από την καθημερινότητα, όπως κινητά τηλέφωνα με κάμερα, smartphones, iPads κ.ά., οι συμμετέχοντες στην πρώτη συνάντηση θα δημιουργήσουν εικόνες, τις οποίες θα χρησιμοποιήσουν στη δεύτερη συνάντηση για την εφαρμογή του video mapping.
Το video mapping είναι μια τεχνική στην οποία οι συμμετέχοντες καλούνται να προβάλλουν δισδιάστατη εικόνα σε μια τρισδιάστατη επιφάνεια, δημιουργώντας έτσι οπτική ψευδαίσθηση. Ο ίδιος ο χώρος μπορεί με αυτό τον τρόπο να χρησιμοποιηθεί και να αλλάξει σκηνική χρήση, ενώ ακόμα και το ανθρώπινο σώμα μπορεί να αποτελέσει επιφάνεια προβολής.
Οι συμμετέχοντες φέρνουν τα τηλέφωνά τους και ό,τι σχετικό εξοπλισμό έχουν, ενώ η Στέγη αναλαμβάνει να προμηθεύσει εξοπλισμό σε όσους δεν έχουν.
Προηγούμενη γνώση video και video mapping δεν είναι απαραίτητη.
Ο κύκλος εργαστηρίων θα πραγματοποιηθεί από τον video artist/VJ Νικόλα Παβόνε.

Μουσική
Οι νέοι δημιουργούν τις δικές τους μουσικές/ηχητικές κατασκευές χρησιμοποιώντας διάφορα αντικείμενα, όπως τάπερ, μαγνήτες, καλώδια, ταμπλέτες, κυκλώματα κ.λπ. Ταυτόχρονα, τους δίνεται η ευκαιρία να μάθουν να φτιάχνουν αλλά και να επεξεργάζονται ήχους με τη χρήση ηλεκτρονικού υπολογιστή και ειδικού προγράμματος επεξεργασίας. Στην τελευταία συνάντηση, όλοι μαζί οι νέοι φτιάχνουν μια «ορχήστρα» χρησιμοποιώντας τα παραπάνω μέσα και διευρύνοντας τα όρια της έννοιας «μουσική».
Ο κύκλος εργαστηρίων θα πραγματοποιηθεί από τους συνθέτες ηλεκτροακουστικής μουσικής/εκπαιδευτικούς Τζων Ρίτσαρντς και Τιμ Γουώρντ.

Stop-motion animation
Παιδιά και γονείς, χρησιμοποιώντας υλικά όπως πλαστελίνη και σιλικόνη, δημιουργούν ομαδικά τις δικές τους κούκλες/χαρακτήρες στην πρώτη συνάντηση. Στη δεύτερη συνάντηση, οι κούκλες ζωντανεύουν και γίνονται πρωταγωνιστές σε ιστορίες/ταινίες μικρού μήκους με βάση την τεχνική του stop-motion, αξιοποιώντας τις ιδέες και τη φαντασία των συμμετεχόντων.
Ο κύκλος εργαστηρίων θα πραγματοποιηθεί από τη σκηνοθέτη/animator Κλεοπάτρα Κοραή.

Οι κινητικές μας συνήθειες, οι κινήσεις της καθημερινότητάς μας μπορούν να αποκτήσουν ιδιαίτερο ενδιαφέρον και να μετατραπούν σε μικρές χορογραφίες. Στο εργαστήριο αυτό, μικρές κινήσεις μπορούν να μετασχηματιστούν σε συνολικά έργα έκφρασης, σε solo, duets, trios.
Το πρώτο Σαββατοκύριακο οι συμμετέχοντες θα ανακαλύψουν τις δυνατότητες του σώματός τους, τις ιδιαιτερότητές τους και την ικανότητά τους να λαμβάνουν κινητικές αποφάσεις, μέσα από μια σειρά αυτοσχεδιαστικών σωματικών ασκήσεων που θα βοηθήσουν στην απελευθέρωση της δημιουργικότητάς τους. Το δεύτερο Σαββατοκύριακο θα έρθουν σε πραγματική επαφή με εξωτερικούς παράγοντες: ένα άλλο σώμα σε κίνηση, μια μουσική ή κάποια εικόνα video.
Ο κύκλος εργαστηρίων θα πραγματοποιηθεί από τους χορογράφους/χορευτές/καθηγητές χορού Ιωάννα Καμπυλαυκά και Σταύρο Αποστολάτο.

Η παράσταση, μέσα από μια αλληλουχία εικόνων βίντεο και ζωντανής πιανιστικής ερμηνείας, σκιαγραφεί έναν παραλληλισμό ανάμεσα στη ζωή και τη δημιουργία δύο μεγάλων καλλιτεχνών, του Μπετόβεν και του Γκόγια, παρότι οι ίδιοι δεν συναντήθηκαν ποτέ και πιθανότατα αγνοούσαν ο ένας την ύπαρξη του άλλου. Οι βιογραφίες τους όμως παρουσιάζουν πολλά κοινά χαρακτηριστικά: η σύμπνοια με το πνεύμα της εποχής τους στην αρχή της σταδιοδρομίας τους, οι ομοιότητες στον κοινωνικό τους περίγυρο, οι πολιτικές τους πεποιθήσεις, που διαμορφώθηκαν στην Ευρώπη των Ναπολεόντειων πολέμων, και το κυριότερο, η δημιουργική αντίδραση που είχαν απέναντι στην απώλεια της ακοής τους, φτάνοντας στην πιο προσωπική τους έκφραση προς το τέλος της ζωής τους.

Τρεις «γέφυρες» μας οδηγούν από τη μία βιογραφία στην άλλη. Η πρώτη αφορά έργα που είναι ακόμα πιστά στους κανόνες της παράδοσης. Μετά την αρχική εισαγωγή του βίντεο και τις εικόνες από τις βασιλικές ταπισερί του Γκόγια, ακούγονται ζωντανά οι Μπαγκατέλλες, έργο 33 του Μπετόβεν. Το δεύτερο βίντεο γεφυρώνει έργα με σαφείς πολιτικές καταβολές: τους πίνακες για την εξέγερση της 2ας και 3ης Μαρτίου 1808 στη Μαδρίτη και τα χαρακτικά των Δεινών του πολέμου με τη Νίκη του Ουέλλιγκτον, την Ηρωική συμφωνία και την εκτέλεση της Σονάτας για πιάνο, έργο 26. Η τρίτη γέφυρα αποτελεί και την πιο ουσιαστική προσέγγιση ανάμεσα στους δύο δημιουργούς. Η σιωπή, που ακούσια γεμίζει τη ζωή τους, οδηγεί τον Γκόγια να ζωγραφίσει τους Μαύρους πίνακες, τρομακτικά οράματα που γεμίζουν τους τοίχους του ίδιου του σπιτιού του, και τον Μπετόβεν να συνθέσει τα τελευταία κουαρτέτα εγχόρδων, τις τελευταίες σονάτες για πιάνο (ακούγεται ζωντανά η Σονάτα, έργο 110), την 9η Συμφωνία και τη Missa Solemnis. Μήπως τελικά η εμπειρία της σιωπής ήταν μια μοναδική απελευθέρωση;

Using as a starting point the poem Monotony of C.Cavafy and the text of R.Vaneigem The revolution of everyday life, the idea of the audiovisual sculpture- installation ‘Monotonia’ was created by the artistic collective Μedea Electrοnique. This artwork is going to be presented at the Onassis Cultural Center at Siggrou Avenue at the 11th and 12th of December and time 17.00, 18.45, 21.00
Concept:
We live in a universal ‘condition’ which forces upon us a ‘monotonous situation’. Our ‘monotonous thoughts’ are designating our everyday acts of apathy that lead us to carapace behavior. Fake illusions of material goals lead us to a circle of events that create a monotonous life-motif. A ‘monotonous situation’ that is in favor of the few, facilitating this way a system of cultural prohibitions and isolated environment. The only enantiosis against this condition are the ‘forbidden illusions’ that have their roots in the expelled dreams of our childhood. These ‘illusions’, revive through the ‘obstructions’ that lead to minor revolutions, the awakening of our inner revolutionary voice, which this way breaks our circle of repetitive events and leads us to journeys of indagation.
Artist statement:
“By deconstructing the meaning of monotony, we render it a universal message translated in lack of variety and interest, repetition and routine. Our goal is to impel the audience to connect multiple moments in a seemingly monotonous circle of events, creating their personal route in the artwork, breaking this way their own ‘monotonous situations’. Believing in productive dialogue, we set the foundations of our artwork on that. We hope to invite the audience to become a part of it as well; a dialogue that we hope to change even for a little while their approach on everyday life.”
With the wordplay –Medea thought the new Media- the artistic collective Medea Electronique was founded in 2006. Independent artists that work in different fields of art, bring together their special adeptness in the fields of research and practice, creating this way a unique style. Medea Electronique is the creative meeting-conjunction of active people that share the same love for innovation, art and novelty.

Με αφορμή το ποίημα Μονοτονία του Καβάφη και το κείμενο του Vaneigem The revolution of everyday life σαν ορμητήριο, δημιουργήθηκε η ιδέα του οπτικοακουστικού γλυπτού installation Μονοτονία που πρόκειται να παρουσιαστεί στην Στέγη Τεχνών και Γραμμάτων στην οδό Συγγρού και ώρα 17.00, 18.45, 21.00 από την καλλιτεχνική ομάδα Μedea Electrοnique.
Concept:
Η παγκόσμια συνθήκη στην οποία ζούμε μας επιβάλλει μια ‘μονότονη κατάσταση’. Οι ‘μονότονες σκέψεις’ μας καθορίζουν της καθημερινές μας πράξεις απάθειας που οδηγούν σε αδιάφορη συμπεριφορά. Φτιαχτές ψευδαισθήσεις υλικών στόχων, οδηγούν σε έναν κύκλο γεγονότων που δημιουργούν ένα μονότονο μοτίβο ζωής. Μια ‘μονότονη κατάσταση’ που εξυπηρετεί τους λίγους, ευνοώντας ένα σύστημα κοινωνικών αποκλεισμών και απομονωμένου περιβάλλοντος. Η μόνη εναντίωση απέναντι στην ‘συνθήκη’ είναι οι απαγορευμένες ψευδαισθήσεις που ίσως να έχουν της ρίζες τους στα απωθημένα όνειρα της παιδικής μας ηλικίας. Τα ‘οράματα’ αυτά αναβιώνουν μέσω των εμποδίων που οδηγούν σε μικρές επαναστάσεις ή αλλιώς στην ενδότερη επαναστατική φωνή μας, που έτσι σπάει τον κύκλο των επαναλαμβανόμενων γεγονότων και οδηγεί σε ταξίδια αναζήτησης.
Η ομάδα δηλώνει για το έργο :
«Αποδομώντας την έννοια της μονοτονίας, την καθιστούμε ένα παγκόσμιο μήνυμα μεταφρασμένο σε έλλειψη ποικιλίας και ενδιαφέροντος, βαρετή επανάληψη και ρουτίνα. Στόχος μας είναι η παρακίνηση του κοινού να συνδέσει πολλαπλές στιγμές σε ένα φαινομενικά μονότονο κύκλο, δημιουργώντας μια ατομική διαδρομή μέσα από το έργο, σπάζοντας έτσι την προσωπική του ‘μονότονη κατάσταση’. Πιστεύουμε στον παραγωγικό διάλογο, πάνω σε αυτόν στηρίζουμε το έργο και σε αυτόν επιδιώκουμε να προσκαλέσουμε τους θεατές. Έναν διάλογο που ελπίζουμε να αλλάξει έστω και για λίγο την προσέγγιση της καθημερινότητας τους»
Με ένα υφέρπον λογοπαίγνιο στο όνομα – Medea μέσα από τα νέα Media- ιδρύθηκε το 2006 η καλλιτεχνική ομάδα Medea Electronique. Ανεξάρτητοι καλλιτέχνες που δουλεύουν σε διαφορετικούς τομείς της τέχνης, ενοποιούν της ξεχωριστές ειδικότητες τους στους τομείς της έρευνας και της εφαρμογής, ορίζοντας έτσι ένα ιδιαίτερο στυλ. Οι Medea Electronique είναι η δημιουργική συνάντηση-συνένωση δραστήριων ανθρώπων που μοιράζονται την αγάπη για το νέο, την τέχνη και την καινοτομία.

With many of the projects taking shape, the residents spent today both fine-tuning projects, and exploring the surrounding countryside. A number of residents took the occasion to visit the sea, and a nearby abandoned village. The ISE ensemble worked with Marielle on her astronomically inspired graphic score, and true to the residency’s guiding principles soon this composition took on the character of the whole ensemble. Late that evening members of the ensemble were up on the roof of the house taking photos of the night sky to transform into scores. Come see the result of this undertaking this Thus evening at KNOT gallery.
Blog Day 7
This was an exciting day for the residents, and we had both a “show and tell” of all the sub-projects, and discussed how to integrate them into Thusday evening’s performance. We ran through the whole program and so saw the collective results of our artistic efforts. It became graphically clear just how much collaborative work has taken place, and we capped of the evening by taking turns leading the ISE with Mad Scientist. It is hard to accept that tomorrow is the last day.
